The presidential elections of 2009 in Iran as an attempt to develop a competition responding to the state monopoly
Abstract
The political system of the Islamic Republic of Iran is a unique phenomenon that comprises both republican and Islamic principles of organization of the state power. However elective institutions such as the President or the Parliament (Mejlis) are totally controlled by Islamic institutions. In this regard, one can observe the religious elite of the state possessing the monopoly of power. Nevertheless, during presidential election campaigns the candidates that had obtained approval of religious authorities fought for the win on the basis of real competitive struggle. In several cases the final results proved unpredictable. The election process of 2009 was highly significant for the country as it became a basis for the mass protests of the opposition that disagreed with the results.
