Artistic styles contest in the Ancient Panticapaeum
Abstract
The outstanding Russian antiquity researcher M.I. Rostovtzeff (1870-1952), who was forced to emigrate in 1918 and eventually accepted a professorship at Yale University, underlined repeatedly that he managed to create his own scholary tradition in the USA. One of its intellectual mainstay was a specific understanding of the system of cross-cultural communications, the contest of the artistic styles in the Hellenistic period. In this article there is an attempt to reveal the origins of M.I. Rostovtzeff’s particular view of that issue by analyzing his pre-emigrant works dedicated to the research of the ancient Panticapaeum funerary paintings.
