The evolution of the nuclear energy policy of CEE countries in the context of starting up the unified EU energy policy (2000-2011)
Abstract
This article analyses the development of nuclear energy policy of CEE countries in the context of starting the unified EU energy policy. Enlargement of EU to the east of Europe affected the energy security of CEE countries. CEE new member states of EU were forced to adjust their national energy policies in accordance with the environmental standards of common EU energy policy. Due to the growing EU dependence on imported fossil fuels EU’s governing bodies made a decision to diversify domestic energy consumption, including the development of renewables. Significant differences between the CEE new member states of the EU and the old members of the EU in the field of energy, especially in the field of nuclear energy, resulted in the problem of their energy security depriving a number of CEE countries of the possibility of diversification of their internal energy mix by means of nuclear power. Hence nuclear power became one of the reasons for the split of the EU’s energy space into the western and eastern parts,what negatively affected the development of common energy policy of the European Union.
